BMW yesterday dealt a blow to Formula One when the world's largest premium carmaker said it would quit the sport at the end of this season, a decision that reflected cost-cutting across the global car industry.
The German company is the second high-profile team to leave the world's top motor racing series in the past year. Honda, the Japanese carmaker, quit in December amid the deep slump facing the car industry.
Norbert Reithofer, BMW's chief executive, attributed the company's decision to pull out to its strategic move towards "green" technologies.
But the FIA and Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone were in little doubt that the decision was due to BMW's poor performance and a desire to cut costs. The German carmaker, which bought Swiss team Sauber in 2005, has spent more than €200m ($280m) on F1 this year. "When you consider how much money they have spent and the results they have got, it's probably not such a good investment," Mr Ecclestone said.
