Manik Urai by-election:
A 'moral victory for BN', says PM Najib
2009/07/15

Sharif Haron in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt

SHARM EL SHEIKH (Egypt): Datuk Seri Najib Razak has described the outcome of Manik Urai by-election in Kelantan as a moral victory for Barisan Nasional.

The prime minister and BN chairman said although the coalition’s candidate lost in the by-election, the greatly reduced margin showed that there was a major swing of votes towards the BN.

“I view it as a moral victory,” said Najib, who is attending the 15th Non-Alignment Movement Summit, at a news conference on Tuesday night.

Najib Happy With Votes Swing In Manik Urai

From Mokhtar Hussain

SHARM EL-SHEIKH (Egypt), July 15 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak has expressed satisfaction with the swing of votes in the just-concluded Manik Urai state by-election in Kelantan, attributing it to the acceptance by the people, especially the Malays, of the measures introduced during the 103 days thus far that he has been the prime minister of Malaysia.

Although the Barisan Nasional (BN) failed to capture the seat, the result of the by-election was most encouraging, more so because the by-election took place in the Malay heartland, he said.

The BN lost by a mere 65 votes when Mohd Fauzi Abdullah retained the seat for PAS with 5,348 votes after beating Tuan Aziz Tuan Mat of the BN who garnered 5,283 votes in the by-election yesterday.

A morale booster for BN

Headlines Opinion Manik Urai by-election 2009-07-15 12:36
As widely expected, UMNO has been unable to turn the tide in the just concluded Manik Urai by-election. However, the party has outperformed itself compared to last year's general elections, losing only by a very thin margin of 65 votes!

PAS candidate Ismail Yaakob won by a respectable margin of 1,352 votes during the last general elections, but in merely a year and a half, Mohd Fauzi Abdullah, tasked to defend PAS' seat in the by-election after the former's death, took a total of 5,348 votes, defeating BN's Tuan Aziz Tuan Mat who managed to secure 5,283 votes, much to the surprise of everyone.

To PAS, in particular menteri besar Datuk Nik Aziz, the by-election serves as warning, as Manik Urai is a typical Malay constituency, and the much favoured PAS barely managed to hold on to it after a truly tough fight.

In Kelantan, BN's economic slogans didn't quite work out in the past, even in that battle just before Manik Urai, BN could only make it at the Pengkalan Pasir by-election with the help of mail ballots.
