DAP and Pakatan mend ties in Kedah -thestar
KUALA LUMPUR: The Kedah DAP is ready to mend ties with the state Pakatan Rakyat following a dialogue between DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak here on Wednesday.
“The pig abbatoir has been resolved with new pig-breeding areas having been identified,” Azizan said after his meeting with Lim.
“We will also set up a task force to enable the administrations in Pakatan-controlled state and coalition members to discuss and resolve issues immediately,” he added.
The friction between the Kedah DAP and the PAS-led Pakatan state administration threatened to undermine the coalition.
On July 1, Kedah DAP said it was pulling out from the state Pakatan coalition, its chairman Thomas Su accusing the state government of not giving equal treatment to all Kedahans.
Su said the most recent issue involved the demolition of an illegal pig slaughterhouse, but other issues included the 50% housing quota for bumiputras, the yet-to-be approved application for a state Buddhist centre and the demolition of temples in the state.
Johari Kassim says sorry, may be reinstated -thestar
GEORGE TOWN: Former Seberang Prai Municipal (MPSP) councillor Johari Kassim has publicly apologised to Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng for his outbursts in the media and his role in boycotting the swearing-in ceremony of the new MPSP president.
At a press conference called by Deputy Chief Minister I Mansor Othman here Wednesday, Johari of PKR said he decided to apologise after taking into consideration the people, the party and Pakatan Rakyat’s interests.
“After the meeting between the DAP and PKR on Tuesday, I expect to see better understanding between our parties.
“If there had been better communication in the first place, all this would not have happened.
“Now I just want to put everything behind me and to help Pakatan move forward,” he said, urging all Pakatan members to discuss problems through the proper channels.
“Don’t do it through the media,” he said.
Mansor told reporters the party would immediately write a letter of appeal to Lim and the state executive council calling for Johari’s reinstatement.
“Let’s be clear -- Johari was punished not on his stand but because of the manner in which he expressed it,” he said, adding that he was “very confident” that Johari would be reinstated.
It is learnt that at a conciliatory meeting between DAP and PKR in Komtar on Wednesday, Lim, who is also the DAP secretary-general, was particularly bothered with Johari’s statement that he (Lim) was running the state government like his own backyard.
Last Monday, the state executive council sacked Johari, the PKR’s council whip, for leading eight MPSP councillors from his party in boycotting the June 4 swearing-in ceremony of former North Seberang Prai district officer Mokhtar Mohd Jait as council head.
Johari claimed that the position had been reserved for a PKR member.
